Poetry Unplugged Workshops at Conway Hall

From February 2010, Niall O’Sullivan will be running a comprehensive poetry course for poets at the levels of beginner and intermediate. These classes will take place on Monday evenings in Tower Room 2 at Conway Hall from 7-9pm. The course will run for twelve weeks, barring Bank Holidays. Workshops will take in all aspects of the current poetry scene and will introduce participants to techniques and exercises for writing, overcoming writer’s block, tackling different poetic forms and themes and bringing out the best in their work when reading to an audience. The course will serve to increase confidence in beginners and re-vitalise more experienced poets within a fun and encouraging learning environment.

The course itself will be divided into three phases. The first phase will focus on a number of writing exercises designed to overcome barriers to productivity, writer’s block and creative apprehension.

The second phase will focus on exploring varying poetic forms and themes, challenging participants to step outside their comfort zones as writers and explore new creative territories.

The final phase will concentrate on organising, re-drafting, editing and publicly reading new work. Participants will also be given advice on how to make the next step regarding spoken word gigs and getting their work published.

The workshops will run on the following Mondays:

15 & 22 Feb,
1, 8, 15, 22 & 29 March
12, 19 & 26 April
10 & 17 May

Workshops will be priced at £10 a session or £100 for the twelve-week term. Additional perks will include early booking and reduced admission for the Poetry Unplugged open mic at the Poetry Café on the week of the workshop (or for the full term for full term subscribers). Additional one-on-one surgeries will be available from the hours of 6-7pm and 9-10pm for £20 a session.

Places are limited and priority will be given to full-term applicants. For more information please contact Niall O’Sullivan at contact@niallosullivan.co.uk .

Niall O’Sullivan has been performing poetry all over the UK and Europe for over a decade. He has published two books of poetry with Waterways and works as an editor for Flipped Eye publishing. In 2009, Niall was highly commended by the Forward Prize judges for his poem “The Father in Law” and featured on BBC Radio and Television during his residency at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships. Niall hosts London’s biggest open mic, Poetry Unplugged, every Tuesday at the Poetry Café, Covent Garden.

Lara, There are only two places left so I have to keep them open for someone that would take the whole course. It works as a comprehensive whole and might not work if someone drops in here and there. Some other participants wont be able to make one or two but that’s as far as I can go as far as booking a place is concerned. I will keep you posted though and if there is any space at all before we begin, I will get in touch with you and any others that only want to participate in a few.

Cheers

Niall

Niall, I’m a friend of Sarah Tyrer’s who’s interested in attending the whole of this course – do you have any places left?
Thanks,
Dominic
